The other puppies in the litter will be sold as companion Pet puppies. The differences between the two types of puppies in the litter are usually always unrecognizable to most people. Regency Miniature Schnauzers is located in Los Gatos, California. We offer many services, including the sale of show dogs and superior-quality companion puppies. Regency’s founder, Beverly Verna, began breeding and showing Miniature Schnauzers way back in 1972. Over 179 AKC champions have been bred at Regency, and show dogs bearing the Regency prefix can be found in just about every country in the world. Since her passing, Regency has been run by her son Chris Verna and handler, Alberto Montilla. As a member and Governor of the American Miniature Schnauzer Club, Regency holds the club’s Code of Ethics in high regard. The Code of Ethics states (in Part) that we will breed to improve the conformation, health, and temperament of the Miniature Schnauzer in order to further the integrity of the breed. Regency’s inception was in Santa Clara, California where Beverly and her family lived for 17 years. AKC Breeder of the Year 2006
Sometime in August of 2006 the telephone in Tracy, CA, rang. It was AKC officially calling to speak with Bev Verna. “Oh no!” Bev thought, racking her brain for reasons why AKC might –call. “What form did I not fill out correctly?” was her first thought. The AKC caller, a Mr. Rella, politely asked, “How are you today?” Bev said, “Fine” in a shaky voice. “I have some news that might make your day better,” Mr. Rella said brightly. “You have been chosen Terrier Breeder of the Year!” Bev describes the moment: “I think I was in shock and said a few dumb things after that!” It took a while for Mr. Rella to convince me that this was really true. Although the exact process of choosing the various Breeders of the Year is unclear, Bev said that she had learned that the AKC Board is involved and there are certain requirements that needed to be met –such as years of participation and number of champions bred and their quality – both in the show ring and their “get.” Beyond her shock, Bev said, “I am very humbled that I was chosen from the thousands of dedicated breeders everywhere. We all do the same thing, care for our dogs, research and study to come up with good breeding, spend sleepless nights awaiting the whelping, and then hover over the litter daily. After that, we agonize over which is the best pup and then devote loads of attention to the one we pick. To begin with, we are not “commercial-type breeders” of Miniature Schnauzers. We breed mainly in hopes of bettering the quality and health of the breed and finding a suitable puppy to show and continue my lines, or to sell to another show breeder. Therefore we do not ‘always’ have puppies available.
We will breed a litter in order to protect or advance Miniature Schnauzers and hope that there will be at least one of them to do that. We begin looking for that ‘special’ dog at 8 weeks of age, then again at 12 weeks, 4 months and 6 months. While the litter is growing up, all of the puppies are treated as ‘special’. When evaluating a puppy for show potential, we not only consider the puppy’s physical conformation, but also his personality. We look for and attempt to breed for intelligent, confident, happy, trusting and out-going dogs. We do not want to see shyness, aloofness. or aggression. In other words, we want all the same characteristics that you should be looking for in a treasured family companion. Often, at the 8 or 12 weeks or even the 4 month evaluation, we will find one or more puppies that may eventually be either too big or too small to be considered a show potential, or perhaps the way their teeth meet is not perfect, or some confirmation that only a Breeder would notice that would deem that particular puppy not the best ‘show prospect’.
